Inmarsat has contracted with Cobham Satcom to build a low-cost terminal for the Fleet One satcom service that is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2014. It will be the first terminal available for the Sailor Fleet One service, which gives boaters data connectivity up to 100kbps in a single voice line.

The Fleet One service will be provided through the Inmarsat-4 satellite constellation used by ship operators worldwide. Recreational boaters will access the constellation for Fleet One service using the new terminal once it comes online.

“Fleet One gives owners of smaller boats the opportunity to get online when sailing out of mobile network range,” Casper Jensen, vice president of maritime for Cobham Satcom, stated in a press release. “Sailor Fleet One is going to be an attractive option for boat owners who want to stay in contact with land, but who may previously not have had the space on board, or had considered satcoms as a luxury item only.”
