The 2013-14 academic year will officially be the “Year of the Charles W. Morgan” in the State of Connecticut. The _Charles W. Morgan_ is currently being restored at Mystic Seaport in the Museum shipyard, and will travel to historic ports around New England in 2014. The Museum is also creating educational programs and resources for Connecticut students to learn more about state’s maritime tradition.

The whaleship was built and launched in New Bedford in 1841, and its whaling career lasted 80 years, including 37 voyages. The Charles W. Morgan came to Mystic Seaport in 1941, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967, and is now the oldest American commercial vessel in existence.

“We sincerely appreciate this gesture of support from the Governor, his administration, and state lawmakers,” said said Mystic Seaport president Stephen C. White in the press release. “The ‘Year of the Charles W. Morgan‘ will help us put together a multi-agency initiative to use the Morgan as a catalyst for increased tourism, economic development, and innovative educational programming.”
