Paul Hawran, owner of the 88-foot Outer Reef Cockpit Motoryacht Argo, says it took him a few days after reaching Cape Horn to fully appreciate having achieved his near-lifelong ambition. “I know many other boaters have traveled here,” Hawran says, “but this was my Mount Everest. The journey was difficult and at times felt insurmountable.”

A number of people at Outer Reef, Hawran says, were instrumental in his dream becoming reality. They included Capt. Randy Ives and Outer Reef President and CEO Jeff Druek (that’s Druek in the red jacket, with Hawran).

“Rounding of the Horn was a culmination of what I attempted to achieve many years ago as I built this company,” Druek says. “It was a very proud moment for Outer Reef, as a team.”

The journey to Cape Horn was part of an itinerary that included Alaska, the Galapagos Islands and Patagonia. Argo was purpose-built for the task, with a range of 3,500 nautical miles at a 10-knot cruise.
