Worth The Wait: Monhegan 42

A two-year wait has done wonders for Lyman-Morse's Monhegan series.

It’s rare for a builder to wait two years between Hull No. 1 and Hull No. 2 of a 42-footer, but that’s what happened to Lyman-Morse with the Monhegan 42 .

Hull No. 1 was called Peregrine, and she launched in 2013. Some enterprising boaters found her online, checked her out and commissioned the Maine boatbuilder to create Hull No. 2.

She has now splashed as Lyman-Morse’s first boat certified by the U.S. Coast Guard — whose process, the builder says, is more stringent than that of the American Bureau of Shipping. Power is a pair of 480 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels producing a cruising speed in the high-20-knot range and a top end of more than 30 knots.

Look for the boat on Lake Ontario, where her owners will ferry as many as 15 people at a time to their island retreat.
