With Hurricane Earl stirring things up on the east coast and tropical depressions Fiona and Gaston clipping at its heels, hurricane season is in full swing. These tips will help keep you and your vessel safe.
-Plan ahead with your marina to have your vessel lifted onto land should the weather warrant such a precaution.
-If having your boat hauled isn’t an option obtain the necessary lines and fenders to secure your vessel. Others will have the same idea so ensure you get your necessary supplies well before the storm is expected to hit.
-Check to ensure all your bilge pumps are working properly. Repairing a float switch in inclement weather may turn into a three-hour chore.
-Remove all valuables.
-Snap a picture of your vessel and take inventory of everything you have aboard should you have to file an insurance claim.
-No matter your relationship with your neighbor, ensure that his boat is secured properly. One poorly tied boat can destroy an entire dock in the event of a hurricane.
-Staying aboard and going down with the ship while once an admiral trait it is now just senseless. Find shelter on land and take care of any necessary repairs when the storm has passed.
“Planning is the key to effective hurricane preparation. Smart boaters have a solid hurricane plan in place, and they update it at least every year,” says Coast Guard Auxiliary Officer Christopher Todd.
