Four graduates of Cambridge University, all keen rowers and athletes, plan to leave Los Angeles in April aboard a 29-foot boat and row all the way to Cairns in northern Australia.

Their goal is not just to make it the full 8,446 miles, but also to raise funds for charity, with donations going to Walking with the Wounded and Breast Cancer Care.
First, though, they need enough money to buy everything from food (6,000 calories’ worth per woman per day), safety gear and communications equipment. They figure about $325,000 will do the trick, and they are asking supporters to “buy a mile” apiece for about $15.
