Enjoy too many this weekend, however, and you could be spending the night in a cell that’s as cold as the Rockies.
The U.S. Coast Guard along with its partner law enforcement agencies will be taking part in a national campaign to reduce alcohol related accidents this weekend. The campaign code named Operation Dry Water aims to amp up the prosecution of anyone Boating Under the Influence during the July 4th holiday weekend. Various states around the country have announced that field sobriety checkpoints are a new tool being utilized this weekend to increase enforcement.
The second objective of this campaign is to inform the public that more than 17 percent of all boating fatalities are a direct result of alcohol use.
Consequences for BUI can range from a fine or the impounding of your vessel to being arrested and permanently losing your boating privileges.
While Operation Dry Water is a weekend-long crackdown safe boating should be the everyday goal of all mariners.
