The Cost of Disaster

Weather related damages in the United States this year totaled in the billions.

As of yesterday, the United States set a new record this year with 12 individual storms costing more than $1 billion in damages, breaking the previous record of nine storms set in 2008. According to a report by NOAA the aggregate damage from storms this year totaled at $52 billion. However, the cost in dollars does not compare to the tragic cost in lives — the 12 disasters took 646 human lives, and a total of 1,000 people were lost this year due to weather related deaths.
