Bound for Cape Town

The six teams of the 2011-'12 Volvo Ocean Race head to Cape Town on Nov. 5 amidst fireworks and parachutes.

The 2011-’12 Volvo Ocean Race gets underway Nov. 5 in Alicante, Spain. The six teams start at 1300 GMT bound for Cape Town, approximately 6,500 nm away. Watch the start live here.

And, there will be plenty of festivities before the boats cross the line. According to a press release, eight parachutists will float down to a pontoon in the port just before Prince Felipe blesses the fleet. A fireworks show will follow the departure of the teams.

The race to Cape Town is the first of nine offshore legs the teams will complete during the race. At each stopover, the teams will also sail in-port races for the spectators. Find out more details about the race on the VOR website.
