Reefilla’s Voltab is a portable lithium-ion battery that resembles a giant iPhone. It provides 4.2 kilowatts of peak AC power, or 3.7 kW of continuous output.

The standard Voltab has two Schuko AC outlets, while the electric-vehicle version sports an EV-friendly Type 2 socket. Each model has an onboard battery management system that provides over- and under-voltage protection, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, temperature monitoring and active cell balancing.

Marco Bevilacqua, Reefilla’s co-founder and CEO, says the biggest challenge the company faced when creating Voltab involved fusing energy-dense functionality with eye-pleasing aesthetics. “We developed a completely new battery-pack architecture optimized specifically for Voltab’s form factor,” he says, noting that Reefilla avoided engineering decisions that would compromise Voltab’s optics. “If beauty doesn’t meet functionality, something is always missing,” he says.

Like many lithium-ion batteries, Voltabs have a state-of-charge sweet spot, which is between roughly 10 percent and 95 percent of their total capacity. Users can optimize long-term durability and performance by operating within this zone, which is controlled via an app and Voltab’s battery management system.

Likewise, users can adjust Voltab’s input power from 400 watts to 2 kilowatts based on grid availability, and can charge a Voltab using 120- or 230-volt AC outlets. Charging times are roughly two to eight hours.

Voltab measures about 34 by 10 /2 by 3 1/2 inches, and it weighs 42 pounds. It has an integrated handle and wheels for transportation, plus built-in hooks for secure stowage Each Voltab delivers enough juice to power a 220-volt refrigerator for more than 24 hours. Voltab is built using 100 percent recycled aluminum for its chassis, and with recycled plastic for its body paneling.
