Ocean Signal’s rescueME PLB1 has no monthly monitoring or subscription fee.

ocean signal rescueME PLB1

Here’s one for your tender kit and life-raft ditch bag: Ocean Signal’s rescueME PLB1. The PLB1 ($299) is operated with a single hand by opening a spring-loaded flap and pressing the unit’s activation button (reverse the steps for deactivation). Once on, a high-intensity strobe flashes and the user can extend the unit’s retractable antenna for increased reception. According to Ocean Signal, the device will broadcast its GPS location and user ID for at least 24 hours before its battery fails. Unlike other PLBs, however, there is no monthly monitoring or subscription fee because the PLB1 works exclusively with the Cospas-Sarsat search-and-rescue satellite network, which is government-funded. It broadcasts on the 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz frequencies and comes with a seven-year battery.
