557 Horses!

A new outboard makes a big splash.

Seven Marine 557

Seven Marine recently unveiled a 557-horsepower V-8 outboard engine (shown, right). Seven Marine claims the 557 has nearly 60 percent more power than the 350-horsepower Yamaha 5.3-liter V-8, the 557’s closest competitor. At this writing the 557 has not been sea-trialed, but the company is projecting that twin 557s will push an Intrepid 37 (the company’s test boat) to a top speed north of 70 mph, and at a projected speed of approximately 40 mph (between 3200 and 3400 rpm) will burn 11.6 gallons per hour, per engine. www.seven-marine.com
