German startup Pioneer Yachts says its first PY60 solar-electric catamaran, Pioneer One, is in the final stages of construction and is expected to launch in July ahead of its world debut at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival. The PY60 serves as the new builder’s flagship model and is designed from the outset around solar-electric propulsion rather than adapting an existing powerboat platform.
Founded by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank, Pioneer Yachts was created to address what the company sees as a gap in the market for a practical solar-electric cruising yacht capable of extended operation at sea. Built in Stralsund, Germany, the PY60 combines solar panels, electric propulsion and diesel generators within a single energy-management system intended to support long-term autonomy and reduce dependence on shore power.
The catamaran was designed by Italian studio Cossutti & Ganz, while interiors come from Micheletti + Partners. The yacht is capable of reaching 11 knots and has a cruising speed of 7.5 knots.
According to the builder, the yacht’s expansive solar roof generates much of the energy required for typical cruising operations, while onboard battery banks store power for silent operation and extended autonomy. The yacht’s hull geometry, weight distribution and superstructure proportions were all developed specifically to support solar-electric propulsion and improve efficiency.
Despite its 60-foot length, the PY60 is intended for owner operation. Features include simplified onboard systems, electric propulsion and a joystick docking system that integrates the propulsion motors and bow thrusters for maneuvering in tight quarters. A 48-volt electrical backbone powers the yacht’s major systems, a design the builder says enhances safety and simplifies maintenance.
On board, the yacht is arranged around a one-level living environment that connects the cockpit and salon through what Pioneer says is the largest cockpit door in its class. Large windows are intended to maximize natural light and create an interior suited to extended time aboard.
Following its launch, Pioneer One will also serve as an operational test platform, with Frank planning to cruise aboard the yacht and use real-world performance data to help refine future production models.
