Volvo Penta’s IPS propulsion system is well known to builders of powerboats ranging from the Nisi 1700 Xpresso to the Riviera 445 to the Coastal Craft Concord 65. Now comes word from Sunreef Yachts that its engineers, working alongside Volvo’s, have developed an innovative version of the IPS system for use with larger catamarans.

The 60 Sunreef Power Lilu is the first boat to benefit from the collaboration, which required modifications to the line’s existing hull form. Changes had to be made to fit IPS units into the engine room, as well as to allow for correct positioning of IPS units in relation to water level and hull position — which is more challenging on catamarans, Sunreef says, because their aft sections are narrower than those on traditional powerboat designs.

Sunreef is now going to offer IPS as an option on all of its powercats, including the forthcoming 90 Sunreef Power.
