Version 1.0.0 of Signal K has been released. It’s a data standard that gives developers a platform for building hardware and software in an open-source, web-friendly, extendable way for boats.
According to its creators, Signal K converts, combines and expands the NMEA protocols on most boat navigation systems, making the older formats compatible with the latest mobile devices and Internet-based communications technologies.
To get to the launch of version 1.0.0, the team had more than 350 participants, including various companies worldwide.
What does this mean for your boat? The developers say that Signal K lets boaters buy a gateway, plug in a Wi-Fi router and start using Signal K data, apps and services.
