Silent-Yachts, which has more than 15 years’ worth of experience in alternative power sources for yachts, has announced a collaboration with Volkswagen and the Spanish automobile brand Cupra to create a solar-electric catamaran.

The vessel will be powered by Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix, or MEB.

“I’m happy to cooperate with our partners on this exciting new project,” Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, stated in a press release. “Volkswagen Group is one of the most advanced players on the electric cars market, and I am sure together we can make something really special on the water.”

The catamaran promises “noiseless navigation” and unlimited cruising range. According to Silent-Yachts, the cat also will need less maintenance and will cost less to operate than any conventionally propelled boat.

What is Cupra bringing to the project? Sex appeal. Silent-Yachts says boaters should expect a “contemporary touch and sporty approach” in the catamaran’s design.
