Arcadia Yacht’s Sherpa
When I stood on the aft deck of the Arcadia Yachts’ 85 last fall and heard the builder’s executive team talk about this new vessel called the Sherpa , I couldn’t help but admire them. Here was a group of lifelong yachtbuilders dreaming up and constructing a truly different type of craft. This is a yacht that is varied in style and function.
This latter point is driven home by the 55-foot Sherpa’s double-paneled solar cells. These cells generate 3.5 kW of power, enough juice to run the yacht’s electronics, A/V system, refrigeration, lights, heads and more.

Other features include a pollutant-reducing wastewater-treatment setup and an optional hybrid propulsion system that allows the yacht to cruise at 8 knots with zero emissions.
Even without a hybrid power system the Sherpa’s semidisplacement, solid fiberglass hull form is designed for optimal efficiency.

Twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels are said to push the Sherpa along at a 20-knot cruising speed, with a 25-knot top end. At cruise, the engines reportedly burn about 25 gph. Reducing speed to 12 knots takes that burn down to around 11 gph, offering a range of 466 nautical miles.
This yacht has varied layout options too. She can be configured with as few as one stateroom or as many as three.

In the one-stateroom setup, the master takes advantage of the yacht’s 18-foot beam, creating a large suite. It features a walk-in closet, full-beam head and modular lounge area. The suite has sliding panels that can section off or open up the space within the stateroom.

For the voyaging couple traveling with friends, the two-stateroom version offers a guest space with side-by-side berths. A large cruising family might want three staterooms, with a forepeak master and two rooms with side-by-side berths abaft and to port and starboard. You also have choices when it comes to the massive cockpit area. Day boaters or weekenders can leave it completely open and select whatever furniture that suits their needs, from several large sun pads to a formal dining table, chairs and bench seating. Enclosing the space creates a more traditional salon.

The Sherpa is the entry into Arcadia’s fiberglass yacht line, which runs up to 115 feet length overall. There are plans to develop models in steel and aluminum from 145 to 180 feet. And whether the yacht is small or large, Arcadia will always build on innovation and originality.
