Garmin has introduced its new Signal VHF series of fixed-mount marine radios, bringing a modern touchscreen interface and expanded connectivity to onboard communications systems. The lineup includes the Signal VHF 220, the flagship Signal VHF 400 and the new Signal RM 100 remote station.

Designed to occupy minimal helm space, both radios feature what Garmin says is the industry’s first 3.5-inch color touchscreen with edge-to-edge glass. The compact units also incorporate automated squelch and adaptive noise-cancellation technology intended to improve voice clarity in noisy offshore conditions. Additional features include the ability to record and replay up to three minutes of radio traffic, advanced channel-watch modes and Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC) functionality for emergency communications.

The premium Signal VHF 400 distinguishes itself with an integrated Class B AIS transponder, allowing the vessel to both transmit and receive AIS data. Nearby AIS-equipped boats can view information such as vessel name, position, speed and course, helping improve situational awareness in busy waterways and reduced-visibility conditions. The Signal VHF 220 includes an AIS receiver, allowing operators to see AIS-equipped traffic without broadcasting their own vessel data.

Garmin also designed the VHF 400 to transmit and receive VHF, DSC and AIS communications through a single VHF antenna while incorporating an internal GPS receiver. The radios support both 12- and 24-volt electrical systems and integrate with Garmin chartplotters through NMEA 2000, Garmin Marine Network and Garmin BlueNet connectivity.

For vessels with multiple control stations, the new Signal RM 100 remote station allows operators to access radio functions from a secondary helm, tower or flybridge. Connected through the Garmin Marine Network, the RM 100 includes an intercom feature for communication between stations and mirrors the touchscreen styling of the main radios.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows captains to configure settings, program an MMSI number and receive over-the-air software updates through Garmin’s ActiveCaptain mobile app.
