U-Boat Worx’s Super Sub Gets Speed Boost

U-Boat Worx says its Super Sub’s speed has climbed from 8 knots to 10 knots.

U-Boat Worx is building its first Super Sub and is planning to launch it in spring 2023. The company says the Super Sub design has been optimized as “the most flow-dynamic submersible ever conceived.”

Original estimates of 8-knot speed have increased to 10 knots. According to the company, the Super Sub now has the same efficient flow dynamics as an electric car.

“We are very excited about this development,” U-Boat Worx CEO Bert Houtman stated in a press release. “It’s something we have been working hard on, and, now, to have the most flow-dynamic submersible possible, we couldn’t be more pleased.”

The Super Sub is a three-person submersible that can dive to about 980 feet. Gaining the extra speed was done in collaboration with the Dutch maritime research institute MARIN, which specializes in computational flow dynamics.

U-Boat Worx says the 10-knot speed makes the Super Sub 3 to 4 knots faster than any bottlenose dolphin and 7 knots faster than the average submersible.

How does the Super Sub steer underwater? With four thrusters that deliver 60 kW of thrust. In combination with rudders, the thrusters reportedly allow for 30-degree climbs and dives.
