For nearly 50 years, Maine-based Lyman-Morse has built a reputation for handcrafted yachts, and its newest launch continues that tradition. The builder recently unveiled the first Hood 42 LM, a 42-foot cruiser designed by C.W. Hood Yacht Design that pairs timeless New England lines with contemporary engineering.
At first glance, the Hood 42 LM looks every bit the classic Downeast yacht, with varnished mahogany house sides, a graceful sheerline and bronze accents. Underneath, however, the yacht is built using Lyman-Morse’s cold-molded wood-composite construction process, combining Douglas fir and Western red cedar with advanced composite laminates to create a lightweight, rigid structure intended to deliver a quiet ride.
Power comes from twin Volvo Penta D6 480 hp diesel engines with DPI drives, providing joystick maneuverability and cruising speeds reportedly in the mid-30-knot range.
While the first hull reflects its owner’s custom vision, it also showcases the flexibility of the Hood 42 LM platform. Standout details include concealed helm electronics, custom bronze hardware, electrically operated salon windows and a carbon-fiber companionway door finished with varnished wood veneers. Buyers will also be able to choose from multiple interior layouts along with either flybridge or sedan configurations.
Belowdecks, Hull No. 1 features a single owner’s stateroom forward with an enclosed head and separate shower. On the main deck, the helm, galley, salon and entertaining areas share an open layout illuminated by expansive windows.
The Hood 42 LM joins the growing Hood Series, which also includes 35- and 57-foot models, while a 46-footer is currently under construction. The new yacht is scheduled to make its public debut at the Newport International Boat Show this September.
