Yachts in Pop Culture

Yachts can play an important role in a music video or movie, and sometimes end up stealing the show. What are some of your favorites?

How many times have you watched a movie or music video with someone who was really into cars or motorcycles? Chances are that if you have, they gave you a gentle nudge and mentioned something about the particular make and model of automobile or motorcycle on the screen at that moment.

Unfortunately, the opportunities for yachting enthusiasts to give their movie partners the same treatment don’t seem to be as prevalent. Though, that’s not to say that there haven’t been a number of yachts featured prominently in music videos or movies. In fact, just last weekend millions of homes were treated to some great shots of a wonderfully unique yacht. If you watch Saturday Night Live, then you probably already know what I’m talking about. Even if you don’t, you’ve probably seen the latest SNL digital short titled “I’m on a Boat” via your e-mail inbox.

The video features some well-known stars like Andy Samburg and rapper T-Pain. However, it’s the 122′ Oceanfast Never Say Never that probably caught the eye of most yachting enthusiasts, and sent them scrambling to their computer asking “what yacht is that?”(I know I did). To help answer that question for you, it’s a Jon Bannenberg design that was built in 1985, and was the first of his more futuristic designs.

However, it’s not the first yacht to draw the attention of movie and TV viewers.

Before “I’m on a Boat” could even be created to parody music videos on yachts there needed to be some actual music videos on yachts. Probably one of the first, and most viewed, videos featuring a yacht is rapper Notorious B.I.G’s “Hypnotize”. It opens with Notorious B.I.G., Sean “Puffy” Combs and some ladies cruising on a Tempest 60′ Sport.

Though, music videos aren’t the only digital medium that yachts are cruising these days. Movies showcase them as well, and usually put them on screen for much longer periods of time.

In fact, around this time last year the 138′ Richmond Yachts Keri Lee was showing off to movie audiences worldwide. You probably know her better as Precious Gem from the movie “Fool’s Gold”.

And if action is more your thing, then you’ve probably seen quite a few Sunseeker yachts on the big screen over the past few years whether you realized it or not. That’s because “Quantum of Solace” marked the fourth consecutive appearance in a James Bond film for Sunseeker.

Obviously, these are just a few examples of yachts being used to accentuate a music video or movie. Feel free to send in (e-mail here) some of your favorites, and we’ll try to post some of the more memorable ones online.
