Volvo Penta earned an NMMA Innovation Award for its Forward Drive (FWD) propulsion system at the recent Miami International Boat Show.

The system includes forward-facing, dual counter-rotating props with an adjustable trim drive. The design pushes, instead of pulls, boats through the water, allowing builders to create new models optimized for diving, swimming and fishing behind the boat.

“Winning this prestigious NMMA Innovation Award is a great testimony to the passion for innovation that drives our Volvo Penta team,” Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas, stated in a press release. “It’s the latest breakthrough technology to join Volvo Penta’s impressive list of boating industry firsts, including Aquamatic sterndrives in 1959, DuoProps in 1982, IPS in 2005, joystick controls in 2006 and the Glass Cockpit in 2013.”

FWD is part of Volvo Penta’s “Easy Boating” initiative, which is meant to get more families onto the water.
