Videoworks in Italy, which has installed rack systems aboard yachts by Benetti, Baglietto, Ferretti and more, is promoting Kerio Control as an all-in-one threat and connection manager that protects yachts against cybercrime.
Videoworks is asking yacht owners to rethink systems connected by way of VLAN, which has one internet entry and exit point — one portal for a hacker to access via something as simple as a malicious email that could allow access to navigation and other integrated systems.
Kerio Control has a system that monitors entering and exiting internet communications, adding firewalls, load balancing and a web filter that lets administrators deny or limit access to various applications and services.
“Videoworks integrated Kerio Control into their rack systems aboard multiple superyacht projects by Benetti, Baglietto, Perini Navi, Ferretti, Admiral and CCN, among others,” the company stated in a press release. “Combined with Cisco’s ‘high network’ devices such as Aironet Access Points, Catalyst Switches, 4000 series routers and next-generation ASA FirePower firewalls, it provides robust, integrated threat defense and security management before, during and after a security breach.”
Can hackers really take control of a yacht? Yes. In 2017, a cybercrime specialist hacked a yacht’s Wi-Fi connection and gained control of systems including navigation and onboard closed-circuit TV.
