Ted Turner returned to the helm of the 12 Meter American Eagle for the 2011 12 Meter North American Championships, held September 23-25 in Newport, R.I. He captured the Pine Brothers Sponsor Trophy for best overall performance, as well as first place in the Traditional division.

The racing took place in three divisions (Grand Prix/Modern, Traditional, Classic) with nine 12 Meters: Victory 83, Courageous, USA, Intrepid, American Eagle, Weatherly, Columbia, Northern Light, and Onawa.

Victory ’83 captured the win in the Grand Prix/Modern division, while Northern Light took honors in the Classic Divison.

Several other celebrity yachtsmen participated including Dave Pedrick, Richie Boyd, Scott Perry, Andy MacGowan, Jim Gretzky, Reggie Pierce, Tom O’Brien, Richie Sayer, and Stu Argo.

Ted Turner also presented the Ted Turner Trophy to Guy Heckman, who campaigns USA. This new trophy was designed by Dan MacDonald of Three Golden Apples in Newport, and is awarded to an individual for contributions to the 12 Meter Class on and off the water.
