47-foot Buddy Davis sportfish yacht Plugger
Jeffrey Lowell, a sales broker with Woods & Associates, sat with me recently aboard the just-restored, 1971-built, 57-foot Trumpy Somerset. He told me that from his vantage point in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Newport, Rhode Island, the brokerage market seems to be warming up once again to yachts of that pedigree.
“The market is finally picking up for these kinds of specialty boats,” he says. “Eastbays, custom sportfish boats — we’re trying to find the gentlemen yachtsmen who appreciate quality, and they’re just now coming around again after a few years of being quiet during the recession.”
Somerset is a yacht that Lowell is helping to advertise not for sale, but instead for charter in partnership with Nicholson Yachts. He delivered her to New England following a nearly three-year restoration project at Yachting Solutions in Maine.
On the brokerage side, down in Florida, Lowell is excited about the 2003, 47-foot Buddy Davis Plugger, which has an asking price of $595,000. Plugger has a pair of 825-hp Detroit Diesel engines, teak decking and detailing, and a high-end custom interior (in addition to her Buddy Davis construction pedigree).
“She’s a beautiful sportfish,” Lowell told me. “Not everybody understands a boat of that quality, but for the buyers who do, that is one nice option.”
