Safer Paddling: Life Jackets

Paul and Kate Kuthe show why it's important to wear your life jacket while operating any type of watercraft.

It's important to know which life jacket is right for you and wear one while operating any watercraft or while enjoying water sport activities. Here are some tips to have a safe and enjoyable time while on the water.

Tip 1: Wear Your Life Jacket

Life jackets work only when you wear them. The law requires you to have a personal flotation device for every person, on every boat. That includes kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards.

Tip 2: Look for the USCG Stamp of Approval

Make sure the life jacket(s) you purchase have the U.S. Coast Guard label. This certifies that they will meet the proper standards for safety.

Tip 3: Set an Example

Just because you're an adult or an experienced swimmer, doesn't mean you don't need to wear a life jacket. Set an example for the children onboard and others by always wearing the proper safety equipment.

Tip 4: Find the Right Fit

Zip it, clip it and (if it's got a snap) snap it up. Make sure the life jacket is easy to pull on and fits comfortably and snug when secured to your body.
