One Fish, Two Fish

Too many damn illegal fish.

One Fish, Two Fish

A bill was introduced to Congress yesterday that would prevent illegally caught fish — known as illegal, unreported and unregulated (or IUU, pronounced “ewwww”*) — and the vessels that carry them from entering U.S. ports to offload their ill-gotten catch. The bill, which puts into action an international agreement that the U.S. helped negotiate, will benefit fishermen, seafood buyers and seafood consumers by keeping the illegal seafood off the global market. Illegal fishing throughout the world takes approximately $23.5 billion annually out of the pockets of legal fisherman and undermines the ability to monitor and maintain sustainable fisheries.

*Author’s note: No idea how IUU is actually pronounced but that seems about right.
