Mario Amati, the founder of Rome-based boatbuilding company Itama, passed away on Monday, February 22, at 83-years old.

Itama – named after the founder’s reversed surname – was started in 1969 and specialized in open-boat design. Models included sleekly designed, low-profile and racy 45-, 62- and 75-footers. Ferretti Group acquired Itama in 2004.

“On behalf of the Ferretti Group, and of those who love the sea and the Itama style, I thank a man whose vision, intelligence and work have left their red letter mark on international yachting,” stated Alberto Galassi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ferretti Group in a press release.
