Amels says it has become the first Dutch builder to slash nitrogen-oxide emissions by nearly 80 percent. The news comes toward the end of an 18-month program at the shipyard that will reduce the environmental impact of the Amels 188 currently under construction.

The new yacht, in addition to being Amels’ first with a hybrid power switchboard, will meet Tier III regulations set by the International Maritime Organization for engine-exhaust gases produced by yachts over 500 gross tons with global cruising ability.

“When the IMO clarified the deadline for the Tier III limits, we realized that the industry had no available integrated solution and very limited practical know-how,” says Amels technical director Hans van Triet. “So we took the lead to ensure there would be no delays for our clients.”
