Hacker Boat Co. Inc., builder of the beautiful mahogany Hacker-Craft motorboats, has opened a new 32,000-square-foot production facility in Ticonderoga, New York, where it will build its first new model in 15 years — the 26-foot Sterling. Designed in the style of 1940s runabouts, the Sterling features a wider beam, a more barrel-backed tumblehome, and art deco touches not found on Hacker-Craft runabouts of the 1930s. Still hand-built from mahogany (and hand-varnished — 16 coats in all) in the United States, Hacker-Craft’s new builds reflect a golden era in American yachting. In addition to the Sterling, Hacker-Craft is also building runabouts, sport boats, launches and racers from 24 to 35 feet (such as the 30-foot sport model seen here).
