7 Reasons We’re Psyched for Skyfall

The largest build yet for John Staluppi will be a 223-footer from Sunrise Yachts.

John and Jeanette Staluppi, long known among yacht-spotters for their builds bearing the names of James Bond films, have commissioned a 223-foot superyacht from Sunrise Yachts.

Skyfall is scheduled to launch in 2017 and will be the largest build yet from the Turkish shipyard. Worth Avenue Yachts brokered the deal.

Here are seven reasons we’re psyched about the new project:

• There’s a much better chance of Adele singing at the christening ceremony for Skyfall than there was during the 2011 launch of the Staluppis’ 200-foot Benetti Diamonds Are Forever.

Skyfall is rumored to be packed with new technologies thanks to Italian designer Vallicelli & Co., naval architects Mulder Design and OYD, and German-based interior designer Focus Yacht Design. We’re hearing phrases like “Voith Linear jet propulsion system” and “MME micro turbines” as “power-generating sources of the future.” Neat-o.

• Sunrise Yachts has been in operation for just six years, showing how quickly today’s superyacht yards can ramp up to take on impressive projects.

• Exterior designer Andrea Vallicelli is describing Skyfall as a “slender yacht,” even though she’ll have five decks. We can’t wait to see that claim in real life.

• The maximum speed on Skyfall is expected to be 23 knots, with a range of no less than 5,000 nautical miles at slower speeds. That’s a serious transatlantic traveler.

Skyfall is being described as a fast-displacement yacht with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. It sounds run-of-the-mill, but with the Staluppis involved, we know it will be anything but standard execution.

Skyfall will be the Staluppis’ 19th yacht. We can’t wait to see what it sparks in their imaginations — and what Bond movies will come out between now and the launch to inspire an even bigger build down the road.
