White shark
A new study suggests there are far more great white sharks off the California coast than previously believed — with as many as 2,400 between Monterey Bay and Bodega Bay.
Before this study, researchers thought there were about 400 great whites at most.
The study was done by a 10-person team led by the director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. It supports recent statements by NOAA and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission that the great white does not qualify for listing under the Endangered Species Act.

Great whites weigh 1,500 to 4,000 pounds and can kill a human in a single bite. They tend to be most active near-shore between August and October.
