Deep Blue, an 80-horsepower electric outboard from Torqeedo ($20,000 without batteries), landed on the market with a bang. Just hours after it was unveiled at the Marine Equipment and Trade Show (METS) in Amsterdam, it won the prestigious DAME Award for the Most Important Innovation of the Year, besting 115 other challengers from 25 countries. Deep Blue separated itself from the competition by way of its massive power output and range (Torqeedo’s biggest competitors are putting out motors in the 20-horsepower range), thanks to lithium batteries adapted from the auto industry. Not just a workhorse, Deep Blue’s onboard computer with GPS technology digitally displays distance traveled and power used while calculating remaining range. Quiet in nature and environmentally friendly, this outboard has already piqued the interest of the National Park Service, which operates on protected waters.
